題目Fluctuational phenomena in micromechanical systems - from Casimir effect to activated switching
内容As micro and nanomechanical structures continue to shrink in size, fluctuation effects become increasingly important in their operation. The Casimir force, for example, originates from the zero-point quantum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field and the boundary conditions imposed by conducting surfaces. We explore the Casimir effect using a micromechanical torsional oscillator. In particular, we present recent measurements on a nanostructured surface that demonstrates the nontrivial boundary dependence of the Casimir force. I will also describe other phenomena that arise from the interplay between fluctuations and nonlinearity. Under strong periodic drive, a nonlinear micromechanical oscillator develops bistability. In the presence of fluctuations, the system can occasionally overcome the activation barrier and switch from one state to the other. We measure the escape trajectories followed by the oscillator, confirming the notion that they form narrow tubes in phase space centered at the most probable escape path. We also observed a wide range of other generic phenomena, including universal scaling of the activation barrier near bifurcation points and the occurrence of kinetic phase transition at comparable state occupations.
